At 1538 mts above sea level, Medellin has an average temperature of 22 degrees Celcius. It is the city with the best utilities services in Latin America

TECHNOLOGY AS A LEGAL RIGHT.

Technological education, which is the mission of ITM, projects the image of the institution as one of quality and of opportunities for the young people of the region which is an essential condition for the development of the country. The institution offers thirteen Technological careers, seven engineering programs and one specialization, all of which are needed by Colombia’s productive sector. This in turn makes ITM an essential part of Medellin’s education.

ITM the result of a tradition

ITM is a brand of quality within the group of municipal public institutions.

ITM was founded as the Workers’ Municipal Institute in 1944. Its main objective was to serve the working class of Medellin. It suffered a transformation in 1949 when it became the Workers’ University of Medellin with the objective of increasing educational coverage for sectors of the population that had traditionally been excluded from social benefits. Later, until the 1990’s, the Institute was called Popular Institute of Culture. As such it brought about the best opportunities for technical high school education within the city with graduates who could find work in the fields required by the industrial development of the time.

Between 1991 and 1993, ITM became a tertiary education school of a technological character. It created its first three programs and took the name of Metropolitan Institute of Technology (Instituto Tecnológico Metropolitano - ITM).

The first institucional development plan was carried outin 1996. Its academic community undertook then to build up the institution as a school of thought. Such challenge implied a will to learn, to work and to serve.

The National Education Ministry granted the institution, by means of resolution 6190 of December 2005, the title of Universitary Institution hence starting a new challenge for the education of Colombians by ITM.

In 2007, after sixteen years since it became an Institution for Higher Education, and eleven years since it put into place its first development plan, ITM has become a brand for culture, quality and equitiy services, efficient and effective administration, and quality of life for the community. It is an asset for the city, a social patrimony of Medellín.
